Doner blog

Berlin's diversity is also reflected in the culinary sector and in the kebab shops, which are particularly popular among the ever-popular kebab shops. From different types of bread to various sauces — one thing is certain: Nowhere does it taste as good as in the birthplace of the cult dish. And now you can find out where I like it best.

MUSTAFA'S VEGETABLE KEBAB

There are people who claim that the crowd in front of the small booth on Mehringdamm that can be observed on a daily basis is an advertising ploy. Created by resourceful marketing professionals who want to artificially create the impression of a popular snack. I'll leave it up to the rumor mongers among us to make such assumptions. It can't matter to me, I just want to taste the tastiest and at the same time probably the most famous doner kebab in the capital. The idea of putting fried vegetables in bread instead of just garden salad and chicken instead of veal was like a kind of “doner kebab revolution” in Berlin back then. Today you can find it everywhere, the vegetable kebab, but here, on Mehringdamm in Kreuzberg, it simply still tastes best, because nothing beats the original!

BISTRO BAGHDAD

My personal legend: When I was in Berlin for the first time over New Year's Eve, I ate here six times in 36 hours. On the one hand, this is of course due to exceptionally crispy bread and the most visually appealing kebab skewer in town. On the other hand, there may also be a reason that Bistro Baghdad is located exactly where Berlin life is bubbling, especially in summer. Schlesische Straße, with its cafés and clubs that reach all the way to the Spree, is one of Kreuzberg's hotspots. In addition to excellent kebab, you can experience an incomparable night and street life here - party tourists, normal tourists, real Berliners, they all like to find themselves on this corner!

HASIR

As long as your name is not Thilo Sarrazin (he is not served here), Hasir on Adalbertstraße near Kotti is THE place to experience a truly traditional Turkish restaurant. They have been preparing doner kebab here for over 30 years, and since then, the initially small Kreuzberg family restaurant has expanded into an established group of six restaurants throughout Berlin. For me personally, the special thing about Hasir is the large selection of grilled specialties that are available here in addition to doner kebab, and which are prepared on a charcoal grill in front of the guests. Add to that the wonderful mix of voices, delicious smells and the nocturnal sounds of this wonderful city coming in through the large windows!

DONER TOWER

With all the hype about Kreuzberg, you should never forget that there are also other districts in Berlin where you can eat good doner kebab. This definitely includes Moabit, a beautiful district not far from the government district. All you have to do is climb the stairs of the Turmstraße subway station and you're right in front of the doner tower. I particularly like the homemade sauces here - especially the spicy ones, which burn off for a long time. And if someone just doesn't feel like eating doner kebab, the Döner Turm also offers an Asian snack and a curry sausage grill!

IMREN GRILL

You can get one of the juiciest doner kebab in Berlin at IMREN. Fresh ingredients every day and a particular focus on top-quality meat make for one of the best taste experiences in town. In addition to classic doner kebab, meatless alternatives such as falafel or halloumi are available, and on the other hand, there is a changing daily menu with various dishes. The employees, who always have a catchy saying on their lips, create an authentic atmosphere somewhere between Berlin doner kebab culture and traditional flair.
